The private sector needs statistical manpower in marketing, insurance, IT and software fields. Government departments employ statisticians to design, collect, analyse and interpret data. Those who qualify master's degree with minimum 55 per cent marks and M.Phil./ Ph.D. in Statistics or qualify UGC - CSIR Lectureship/NET are eligible to get jobs as lecturers in colleges or universities.

The Union Public Service Commission conducts an examination every year for the recruitment of officers to the Indian Statistical Services (ISS). Postgraduate degree holders in statistics / mathematical statistics/applied statistics are eligible to appear for this exam.

The Staff Selection Commission occasionally recruits Statistical Investigators Grade IV under the Subordinate Statistical Service across the country. Those who possess bachelor's degree with statistics or mathematics/economics/ commerce (with statistics as a paper) as one of the main subjects are eligible to appear for the examination. The candidate should not be more than 26 years of age with the usual relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/PH/Ex-Servicemen etc.
