Career Counseling Queries

Subject: Career Consultant
Date: 12-Apr-2009

Question: I want to become a qualified career consultant. Is there any prerequisite qualification for this position?

Answer: With the current economic crisis, there is mounting pressure on organisations to minimise operating costs yet retain competitiveness. Hence the need to improve efficiencies has escalated to unimaginable proportions. This has directly necessitated the role of consultants. Consultants are now being engaged by firms to recommend coping mechanisms and alternate growth strategies.

Consultants should at least be graduates coupled with substantial years of work experience. Credibility is important and hence, a consultant’s professional track record should be blemish free. Though expertise in specific subjects is mandatory, a consultant should have a fair understanding of the interplay between various market dynamics. It is expected of a consultant to be conversant with laws, regulatory policies and the general political climate, both at the national and international level. Good interpersonal skills and an understanding of ground realities is an added asset.
