Question: Hi, I'm having such a hard time deciding on the right major for college. On one hand, I want to major in creative writing and be a poet, but on the other hand, i think i would enjoy majoring in human nutrition and working overseas to cure hunger and malnutrition and such. English is my strong subject, but I just don't know what to do?

Answer: What I would recommend you is to go for the second option of yours ie doing your further studies in human nutrition.Creative writing signifies the product of some inborn talent which has to be chiselled by learning writing skills due to ever changing usage of language and styles of writing and poetry comes from heart. So no one can learn these things by joining some institution, though you can get training for it to polish your skills.Creative writing can be done side by side, even through distance education mode, while pursuing some other course or some other career.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) offers courses in creative writing, namely, Diploma in Creative Writing in English and Hindi. The IGNOU also runs courses such as PG certificate in radio writing and the PG Diploma in translation, through the distance education mode. The School of Humanities of IGNOU conducts all these courses. The PG Diploma course is divided into five parts, namely, general principles of writing, feature writing, short story writing, writing for media-radio and television and poetry writing. So if you want, you can pursue this course while majoring in other subject.

All the best
