Subject: Confusion between BFA and Hotel Management
Date: 16-Apr-2009

Question: Could you suggest me about BFA and Hotel Management? I am so confused towards both of them.

Answer: Fine arts education is entirely different from other disciplines and it requires some inborn talent and skills. So the aspirants of fine arts education, especially Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) course should have artistic and creative talent, good imagination/visualisation and team spirit. Fine arts mainly focuses on painting, sculpture, applied art, graphic design, and so on.So if you have such a talent in you, then only should think of entering this area. Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree course is for those who have passed Plus Two/equivalent examination with any subject combination. The duration of the course is four years. For BFA, selection will be made on the basis of an aptitude test consisting of subjects - drawing study from life with pencil/charcoal/pastels (in black and white only); creative composition in painting; creative composition in sculpture in clay and graphic design. The aptitude test covers drawing, painting, sculpting and designing. Those who obtain BFA/MFA degrees have job opportunities in the academic field. BFA holders in applied arts and painting will have opportunities in print and visual media as artist/graphic artists.

Several Government departments, including agriculture/farm information bureaus have the post of an artist.

BFA degree holders also have self-employment opportunities. Those who obtain GDPD or PGDPD from the NID, Ahmedabad can land executive/management jobs in the relevant field in the industrial/marketing/design sectors.

As far as Hotel Management is concerned, the Indian hospitality industry, which is growing at a rate of 12% per year, offers a wide range of opportunities to students specializing in Hotel Management. The Commonwealth Games in 2010 will further add to the growth. For Hotel Management aspirants, there couldn’t have been a better time to join the cadre. For Certificate, Diploma and Bachelors courses 10+2 is sufficient. Personal attributes for working in this field are:

  • Good organizational skill
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • you must be an extrovert, co-operative, polite and respectful to guests
  • have patience to deal guest criticism even when you know you are right
  • willing to work hard even at odd hours and
  • have a cheerful disposition.

After doing a course in Hotel Management, you can look for a career in:

  • Hotel and restaurant management
  • Airline catering and cabin services
  • Club management
  • Cruise ship hotel management
  • Hospital administration and catering
  • Hotel and tourism associations
  • Forest lodges
  • Guest houses
  • Institutional management (supervising canteens in college, schools, in factories, company guest houses etc.)
  • Catering departments of railways, banks, armed forces, shipping companies etc.
  • Hotel and catering institutes
  • Self employment

Students graduating from established institutes of hotel management can join Railways, Airlines, and Shipping lines in their catering services, or the defense sector. Hospitals and other institutions also recruit hotel management professionals.

So now after knowing the details of both the courses your confusion might have reduced and I hope you would be able to make an appropriate choice according to your interest and aptitude.

All the best
