This is the emerging standard for simplifying Network Management. It is committed to architectural standards such as Enterprise Storage Management Architecture (ESMA)

Legato Systems has a workforce of 1250 qualified people, offices in 43 countries and 10 development labs. Legato Systems India (LSI) is the only development lab outside US and is staffed by highly qualified workforce in two fully functional departments: Engineering and Test Engineering. LSI currently has around 40 employees, of which 90 percent of who are engineers involved in the design and production of software.

Legato's Arsenal

Legato Systems develops, markets and supports network storage management software products for heterogeneous client/server computing environments; and licenses source code of its software products to original equipment manufacturers.

Legato Systems's flagship product NetWorker is the de-facto standard for network storage management. It is estimated that NetWorker currently has more than 60% market share among Unix-hosted network storage management products in the world. It is installed at thousands of sites worldwide, where comprehensive data management of mission-critical data is of utmost importance.

Legato Systems's cutting edge Global Enterprise Management of Storage (GEMS) allows enterprises to separate enterprise control from data protection. GEMS provides the core tools needed to implement control zones to manage many NetWorker-managed Data zones effectively, including policy-based administration, software distribution, flexible software licensing, and management of all storage media.

Legato Systems's SmartMedia is an open media management application that provides standard interfaces for applications, media hardware control, and administration, thereby enabling enterprises to improve the management of growing base of media and devices across a heterogeneous storage environment.

Legato Systems's clustering solution provides state-of-the-art, best-in-class capabilities for clustering and data protection. Clustering capabilities leverage data mirroring capabilities -to protect data around the nodes in a clustering environment, to support application migration; this means that, for example, system maintenance activities can include upgrades to disk without interrupting production activities. At the same time, data mirroring capabilities leverage clustering capabilities - to ensure that the data mirroring solution is proactively managed and available, automating data movement activities such as sharing information among remote sites and the home office, and data maintenance activities such as tape backups. And, by combining clustering with data mirroring, it protects all of your computing resources in a single solution - services and data - removing shared disks as potential single points of failure in your environment. So, it is an evolution in high availability - providing state-of-the-art capabilities integrated in new combinations that provide new synergistic benefits, and which is designed to support Enterprise businesses.

Legato Systems commitment to Technology

The Legato Systems recently announced the Legato Data Protection Process (LDPP), an important new architectural framework. This framework will enable storage management to evolve from a discrete event, or series of events, to a continuous, seamless process that requires no user intervention through the tight integration of key storage technologies. LDPP will include a suite of customer-focused products and services aligned precisely with Legato's core competencies.

The first demonstration of LDDP came when Legato announced Celestra™, the latest technology innovation for performing live backups on Fiber Channel-based Storage Area Networks (SANs), while bypassing the server. Legato and Hewlett-Packard together 0demonstrated Celestra running in a H-P computing environment at the Network Storage Conference in Monterey, USA. Legato Systems is driving key standards for SAN/NAS (Network Attached Storage)market with NDMP and Celestra.

In this demonstration, Legato Systems's NetWorker and BudTool software managed the movement of hundreds of gigabytes of data from H-P's JBODs, connected to a H-P 9000 Enterprise D-Class server through a H-P Fiber Channel to SCSI Multiplexer, backing up to DLT tape library. This process eliminates the need for a backup window.

Development Center in India

LSI is primarily involved in developing and enabling technologies and products which will be marketed in the US or elsewhere by Legato. At Legato, development engineers work in three areas:

  • Development of new products.
  • Incorporation of new and emerging technologies.
  • Enhancements and modifications to existing products.

We offer tremendous opportunities for professional growth because of our product orientation and rich infrastructure. The need to integrate new concepts and technologies in Unix and NT world to the product-line provide immense opportunities for engineers to continuously enhance their technical skills. Engineers may also get onsite assignments in the parent company to work on enabling new technologies and projects. This helps foster much-needed cross-cultural interactivity in a setup like ours.

Our compensation structure is comparable to the best in the industry. We have a well-developed Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for high achievers to really make and feel the difference. PLI is closely linked with individual and group development, and we continuously assess and help the average achievers target and make it to the top. The work environment is extremely congenial and free, with facilities like free breakfast and lunch for the employees. We also provide handsome bucket of allowances.

By joining Legato Systems India you will automatically become part of an Employee Stock Option Plan (ESOP) and optional Employee Stocks Purchase Plan (ESPP) provided by the parent company. Legato Systems also has a Success Sharing Plan (SSP) based on earnings per share (EPS) in each quarter up to 8% of your quarterly salary. Together, these make Legato Systems India a very attractive place for software professionals in India today. After a certain experience level, employees are provided 250 hours Internet access from home. LSI plans to provide telecommuting to employees soon.

We provide many avenues for growth of our employees. A well-developed training and orientation program; regular seminars; tutorials; as well as provisions for attending various professional courses, is part of the employee development scheme that we commit to every year. Our engineers also participate in the Personal Software Process (PSP) program conducted by Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), USA We also have a moderately equipped library with subscriptions to number of magazines. In addition, engineers are provided with facility to borrow books and journals from other commercial libraries such as British Council Library, depending upon their project needs.

LSI has a rich base of hardware and software resources. Engineers work on Unix workstations from SGI, HP and Sun Microsystems, as well as on PentiumII/III with Windows NT and Linux. These workstations have the state of the art stackers, jukeboxes and Tape Drives attached. The LAN which connects all of these workstations is also connected to our parent company in California through a leased line. This ensures a common software base where our developers around the world can work on the latest copy of the product, day or night. Every employee can access the Internet and our Intranet.
