Creation of JRD QV Award
On the initiative of Mr. Ratan Tata a JRD-Quality Value Award was instituted 4 years back and so far 3 annual presentations by different Tata companies have already taken place.
This is an organised affair, rather much more organised than CII's 'Business Excellence Award' JRD Tata corporate leadership award, or any other awards that I know.
The salient features of JRD Quality Value Award are as under:
- There is a separate organisation based at Bangalore, which looks after the entire activities of JRD QV award
- There is a defined system under which Tata companies are supposed to apply every year. However, it is voluntary.
- There is a set of examiners who are thoroughly trained in the art of evaluating the documents or evaluating the real work. These examiners are trained in U.S.A.
- There are seven topics and total marks for evaluation is 1000. The first chapter is 'Leadership' which also suggests evaluating leadership through 360* system of feed back
- The process of evaluation is so stringent that in 1997 only six out of 33 companies were recognised and no company has been so far awarded. Even after 3 years of continuous participation and good business results, many companies have not even been recognised.
- The Leadership work in the whole process is the passion, dedication, quality of work that has been displayed so far by the organisers in providing guidelines and evaluating the companies
- The JRD QV Award guideline is based on Malcolm Baldrige award of USA
- The corporate sector must learn from this and try to improve their real performance also as the Tata companies are trying to do, and try to become a world class company
The consideration for the award is not just growth and profit. There are many things and one of the important consideration is corporate citizenship.
