Career Sculpting

Module: Current Life Position

Great. I am sure each of one of you is enjoying your career expedition adventure.

You have your Goals.

You have your areas of Strategic Vulnerability.

Now you need to answer the following questions for your self before you begin your career sculpting.

  1. What are the areas you have defined Goals for yourself? Chances are that you have said, "in 5 years I would like to become ........... In my current assignment" or "I would like to complete my MBA before..." etc. This is not good enough. We must divide our goals into:
    • Main Goals
    • Subordinate Goals
    • Goals for Family
    • Goals for Spiritual progress
    • Goals for Health etc.
You may decide to add on this list. Please do so.

  2. Does my Critical Success Factor or areas of Strategic Vulnerability has relevance to my goal?

  3. If my critical success factor or strategic vulnerability have no relevance to my goal, do I change my path or should I develop new required skill sets, as required for my goal accomplishment. If so how do I reconfigure my skills?

  4. Have I enough past proven data which I can use to support my unique skill?

  5. Do I have the time? ( revisit your goals with respect to your age). E.g. if you are 28 years old you should not aspire to win gold medal in olympic. Because career sculpting is about matching strength to goals.

  6. Do I have enough interest outside my goal?

  7. Have I made made attempts to use those skills?

  8. When was the last time I attempted? Should I try now.

  9. Do I procrastinate? Procrastination is the greatest stumbling block in career sculpting. If you are in the habit of postponing tasks you may be doing so because you are confident of your goals or you are afraid or it could be any other reason. If so would you want to set goals for this too. Remember your goals are the fuel which would push you forward. If you decide to drop anchor you are doing because of your own self directed efforts.

  10. Is each of my GOAL SMART (i.e.) Specfic, Measurable, Acheivable, Resonable,Time bound? If not revist and make your goals SMART

  11. Does the current task or job I am executing has relevance to my Goal? If not should I shift my task or realign my goals.

  12. Do you have the habit of looking for opportunities?

  13. Do you look for opportunities related only to your area or outside also?

  14. In what frequency (days/months /years) do you look for such opportunities?

  15. What is my attitude towards learning new things? Do I enjoy learning new skills or do I feel very uncomfortable?

By now you would have realized that Managing career is a serious affair. Yes it is. Before a rocket is launched, the specific route it should take is determined so that it would reach the specific planet for which the rocket was intended. A navigator uses his map and compass to keep track of his path. Career Manangement is no different.
