Job purpose

The Engineering Manager assumes complete ownership in the development of product, alignment of technology / design within the product family and target Innovations, while managing the team of engineers. This person shall be responsible for owning the engineering deliverables of the project, ensuring timely delivery with desired quality of the respective product and continuously work with the team to achieve planned objectives. This person tracks the product and project risks on a regular basis and takes appropriate actions to mitigate them. Addition to this, he works with various stakeholders like product management, program management, architect etc. to align the architecture and technology strategy with the overall product roadmap.

Duties and responsibilities

Responsible for development of entire product life-cycle from concept, develop, release, post release maintenance and future releases.

  • Works with product management / business sector to understand the product roadmap and propose the architecture and technology strategy.
  • Plans entire project budget, resources and timeline for the development of a product. Responsible for meeting the project milestones within time, budget and desired quality. Responsible for executing the project as per the defined Software development process. Develop strategies for risk mitigation, including risks associated with unstable requirements.
  • Makes architecturally-significant design decisions at the right level of abstraction. Defines, articulates and applies architectural principles and patterns.
  • Documents and communicates architectures.
  • Manage global collaborations with other Zeiss RD locations to leverage reuse of components and platforms (as needed).
  • Identifies Innovation opportunities for the relevant product in close collaboration with research associates and product management.
  • Provides technical leadership to the team, collaborators and customers.
  • Presents Innovation proposals, concepts, and results to relevant stakeholders. Works with the team to generate IP and patent applications related to the product. Supervises and leads the work of engineering team through entire product life-cycle. Acts as coach / mentor and responsible for all disciplinary aspects of the team. Is aware of state-of-the-art software engineering and architecture methods, tools, and trends


Authorized to take decisions on product development activities and release schedules based on planning.

Authorized to take decisions on architecture, design and technology stack, etc., during product development.

Authorized to assign and manage work packages to various team members. Authorized to review and approve documents as per QMS requirements.


Graduate degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.

Minimum of five years experience in managing end to end delivery of complex software projects is required.

  • Experience in leading technology teams is a must.
  • Experience in releasing the software product into market is desired.
  • Strong problem solving and team working skills.
  • Should have very good communication and presentation skills.

Minimum of six years experience in software development (C++, QT, Linux) is required.

Minimum of four years experience in software architecture, with specialization in desktop applications (Linux Windows based) is required.

Other Attributes

An understanding and appreciation of software development, medical software and relevant legal, scientific and manufacturing areas is also necessary

Direct reports

The role is expected to manage a team of 12-16 direct reportees including a mix of software engineer, software design engineer, software tech leads/architects/team leads.
