Position Overview - Basic Functions Responsibility

The primary responsibility of the Associate Medical Director, Vaccines /ID is to provide medical leadership and strategic oversight to the vaccines and Infectious therapy area franchises.

Our Medical Affairs team advances patient care by engaging in scientific exchange with external medical experts and industry professionals ensuring the scientific value of our products is realized. We engage and train internal employees to ensure that they thoroughly comprehend the science behind the medicine and review further unmet medical needs to bolster collaboration and further differentiate our portfolio.

The Associate Medical Director also provides proactive medical support for marketing, sales and public relations activities. The role contributes to the successful co-ordination with Regulatory Affairs and, Clinical Research and actively participates when appropriate in the support of Market Access activities. The AMD assists with the development of medical strategies to support these teams objectives. The AMD provides a medical point of contact for Advisory Boards and Key Scientific Leaders. The incumbent provides the senior medical face of the company to external parties. In addition, the incumbent works with their team to co-ordinate their time and resource appropriately.


Primary Activities includes but not limited to:

  • Medical advice to Marketing, particularly with regard to the India prescribing environment, Industry Code of Conduct matters, clinical practice and issue management.
  • Ensuring medical assistance with the preparation and discussion of submissions to regulatory agencies, reimbursement applications, and tender documents as requested appropriate
  • Extensive interaction with SLs to assist in their development of knowledge to ensure they are briefed on product and clinical developments. Continually collaborate with a network of key physicians in the relevant therapeutic areas to leverage insights for scientific development
  • Ensure compliance with internal and industry Code of Conduct matters and lead in intercompany dialogue (i.e. complaints and appeals) around Code of Conduct issues
  • Medical advice to, and participation in therapy area and sales training if appropriate.
  • Provide strategic input and medical expertise in the development of clinical research programs in line with global strategy and to support local product registration including support for ISPs, LDGs and outcomes research
  • Help create awareness discussions among/with HCP for disease, immunization, guidelines discussions, use of scientific evidence, antimicrobial resistance, epidemiology data, appropriate use of antibiotics, antifungals in hospital settings.
  • Provide specialized medical knowledge to the cross functional product teams and work with these cross functional teams, enhancing understanding, direction and implementation of medical activities and planning. Including input to Medical Affairs Plans, and brand planning
  • Establish ongoing liaison with key scientific leaders, government officials, regulatory authorities, staff and healthcare organizations and ensure that significant developments in the field are identified and monitored.
  • Consolidate actionable medical insights from the country that can help inform company strategies
  • Translate the Global Medical Goals and Strategies into research, data analysis, scientific communication, educational, and other tactics and solutions that improve patient outcomes and enhance access
  • Follow-up on investigator-initiated study proposals they receive that are aligned with the MISP (Merck Investigator Study Program) areas of interest, assess HECON data.
  • Act with ethics integrity; provide non-promotional, balanced, reliable and scientific information, follow strictly company standards and local regulations

People Management:

  • Participate in the recruitment process, allocate priorities, track, monitor, review and guide performance, provide developmental feedback, suggest training programs and facilitate the developmental process for own Team
  • Actively contribute to Medical Leadership Team meetings and activities whilst developing and implementing Medical department business plans - including provide adhoc medical support for strategic cross department projects.
  • People management responsibility to their field medical team i.e. Medical Advisors, and MSLs


Skills, Knowledge, Experience Qualifications required:

  • MBBS with MD degree is preferred; recognized expertise through 10 yrs. experience in both therapy area is desired
  • Experience of supporting vaccines as well as infectious disease portfolio will be a must.
  • Experience of local pharmaceutical industry guidelines, regulatory/reimbursement framework and clinical research guidelines
  • Strategic thinking, specifically related to asset value proposition, and clinical and value evidence. Must be able to create, help support and help run relevant projects.
  • Developing a network of scientific leaders and successful interactions with other key stakeholders (public groups, government officials, medical professional organizations) in therapy areas
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate information at country management level, with public groups and to scientific leaders.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, communication (written as well as oral) and results oriented project management skills.
  • Strong prioritization skills and ability to understand how decisions fit into the broader context of corporate strategies.
  • In a matrix environment, able to effectively collaborate across functions
